How Can Artificial Intelligence and Augmented Reality prevent Distracted Driving
Using mobile phones for texting, talking and viewing social media when driving vehicles is a significant factor for the rise in the number of fatal accidents. Distracted driving due to mobile phones is growing rapidly and has seen an increase from 1.5 percent in 2012 to 3.4 percent in 2021. Usage of mobile phones for various day to day tasks depending on age groups and surveys gathered on people interests during driving reflects multitasking and intense use of mobile phones. The purpose of this article is to propose an approach to identify mobile phone usage using Augmented Reality system and generate alerts and warnings to the driver to reduce distractions while driving.
The impact of distracted driving across all countries has exponentially grown in the last 3–4 years and texting/talking during driving with a mobile phone was the primary factor for fatalities and accidents. With the evolution of IoT and mobile phones and being able to integrate mobile phones into vehicle infotainment systems, it has become more and more easier for people to constantly use mobile phones during driving. According to recent survey on Zebra and Forbes, talking and texting on phone while driving is not being treated as dangerous by respondents.
